Content transfer, with clear limits

How to Move Gizmo Study Content Into Elly

A Gizmo import into Elly begins with content you can inspect. Save a deck as PDF or prepare clean text pairs, then verify the new study material before relying on it.

The deck you need is in Gizmo, while your new notes are in Elly. There is no reason to retype every useful fact, but a deck-looking PDF is not a native exchange file. Choosing the wrong transfer method can turn a neat question-and-answer collection into duplicated prompts or incomplete answers.

Gizmo's official export instructions use the deck menu, Print, and the browser's Save as PDF option. Elly can regenerate study material from a supported PDF or import prepared CSV, TSV, and TXT pairs. Neither route promises preserved scheduling, images, tags, nested decks, or a live connection between accounts. The steps below deliberately keep your original deck intact while you check a small result.

Should you transfer a PDF or prepare text pairs?

Choose PDF when the original deck contains readable explanations and you want to create a new source-based note. Expect new wording because the file becomes input for generation. Choose a prepared text file when you need controlled front-and-back pairs and can inspect every row. Do not rename a PDF to CSV; changing the filename does not change its contents.

Make an inventory before exporting: deck name, topic, approximate visible card count, and any cards that depend on a picture. Keep a separate note of image-dependent prompts because neither a text pair nor a printed page guarantees the same interaction. For a large course, transfer one topic first and compare the result before preparing the remainder.

  • PDF route: readable snapshot, followed by regeneration and source checking.
  • Text route: manually prepared question-and-answer rows, followed by preview checking.
  • Unsupported expectation: native Gizmo packages, scheduling history, or automatic account synchronization.

How do you save the Gizmo deck as a usable PDF?

Open the intended Gizmo deck, use its three-dot menu, and select Print. In the browser's print interface choose Save as PDF. Preview the page range, layout, and visible answers before saving. These controls belong to your browser and operating system, so their wording and arrangement may differ on a phone and a laptop.

Open the saved file outside Gizmo. Find the first card, a card in the middle, and the final answer. Check whether text is cut off, whether a front and back remain easy to associate, and whether pictures contain readable labels. If the mobile print preview is cramped, try another available device rather than guessing that a saved file is complete.

How does the PDF become new material in Elly?

After signing in, use Elly's supported PDF source workflow to create a note. Give the note the same topic name as the exported deck, with a marker indicating this is a transfer draft. Generate a focused set of cards from that material and keep the original PDF available while reviewing each answer. AI generation can omit a distinction or join separate facts.

Use a transfer ledger with three statuses: supported, needs repair, and excluded. A prompt belongs in supported only when the new answer can be traced to the PDF and remains correct without hidden context. A card asking for a labeled diagram may belong in excluded until you recreate its visual context manually. This is content recovery, not evidence that the two deck systems are equivalent.

What makes a CSV, TSV, or TXT file safe to import?

Prepare a clean question field and an answer field, then use Elly's importer preview to confirm their mapping. Include a test row containing punctuation before importing a large collection. Commas inside explanations can shift fields in an incorrectly quoted CSV, while tabs and line breaks can split a supposedly simple text pair into multiple records.

A short physiology example might pair Which vessel leaves the right ventricle? with Pulmonary trunk. A second row can test a longer explanation with a comma. If either appears in the wrong column, stop and repair the file. Do not use a course-wide import as a delimiter experiment. The Anki import guide at /import-from/anki explains another text-export workflow without claiming a native Gizmo converter.

When is the transfer complete enough to study?

Compare coverage by learning objective instead of assuming a card count proves completeness. Ten long cards may contain more ideas than twenty short ones, and regeneration may split them differently. Make sure key definitions, exceptions, and causal relationships survived. Test several prompts without the original source and repair wording that depends on an omitted neighboring card.

Keep Gizmo and your exported file until at least one real review of the replacement material has gone well. Delete neither as part of the import procedure. If the deck belongs to another learner or includes licensed course resources, transfer only material you are allowed to use. A working import button does not grant permission to redistribute someone else's study collection.

Frequently asked questions

Can I upload a native Gizmo deck file to Elly?

This guide does not claim a native Gizmo deck importer. Use the documented Print-to-PDF route for regeneration, or manually prepare clean pairs in a supported text format. Verify Elly's file picker and import preview before proceeding. Renaming an unsupported package will not convert it into a usable file.

Does saving Gizmo cards as PDF preserve spaced repetition?

A PDF records visible content, not the review engine behind it. Do not expect due dates, answer history, confidence ratings, or future intervals to appear in Elly. Treat the resulting material as a new collection and keep the original account if you still need its existing review schedule.

Why are the new cards different from my Gizmo cards?

PDF generation interprets source content and creates new prompts, so wording and card count may change. Compare facts and objectives rather than requiring identical numbering. If exact pairs matter, prepare a supported text import and inspect the preview, while accepting that specialized interactions and media may still need manual work.

Can I move a public Gizmo deck made by another person?

Public access does not automatically grant permission for copying or redistribution. Check the author's permission and any rights attached to included material. Prefer your own notes or openly licensed resources. Keep attribution and source details with any permitted content so you can identify where an answer came from.

What should I do if the phone cannot save the whole deck?

Inspect the browser print options and the resulting page count first. A preview may be clipped or use an unsuitable layout. If another device is available, repeat the documented print procedure there and compare the saved result. Avoid deleting cards or rebuilding the deck merely to troubleshoot the export.
